HPV Types Explained: Transient vs. Persistent HPV

Human papillomavirus (HPV) is incredibly common, affecting around 80% of sexually active people at some point. There are over 100 types, generally grouped into two categories:


Low-risk HPV: linked to non-cancerous conditions like genital warts.
High-risk HPV: strains like 16 and 18 cause about 70% of cervical cancers, while types 31, 33, 45 and others also carry risk.

Why Does HPV Persist? Understanding the Root Causes

If most people clear the virus, why does it stick around for some? Research suggests persistent HPV is often a sign the immune system is “distracted” or lacks the specific resources it needs to find and clear it.

Hormone

an excess of certain oestrogens can act as “fuel,” encouraging abnormal cell

FAQ

Does HPV go away on its own?

For about 90% of people, yes. The immune system clears HPV within two years. When it doesn’t, it’s
called persistent HPV, and that persistence is what can lead to cell changes such as CIN1–CIN3.

Why does HPV persist in some women?

Persistence is often a sign the immune system is distracted or under-resourced. Common contributors
include oestrogen imbalance, gut and vaginal microbiome disruption, nutrient deficiencies (especially
methylfolate and selenium), and chronic stress and inflammation.

Can you boost your immune system to help clear HPV?

You can’t force clearance, but you can support the immune and cellular systems involved — through
